Mitcham Village Art & Crafts Association Inc (MVAC) is a unique community-based, non-profit, volunteer organisation which began in 1974 with the dual purposes of creating an interest in local history and of establishing the old village of Mitcham as a centre of excellence for the arts and crafts. Over the years MVAC has become a leader in both of these fields.

In 1977 a sub-group was formed within MVAC to promote the study of local history and, in particular, to gain recognition of and heritage protection for the core area of the old village. Mitcham Village was authorised as an "Historic Conservation Zone" in January 1997.
